Easy Way to Set a Farm Table Style Meals Outside
Looking for cute but casual summer entertaining ideas? This farmhouse table setting is sweet and simple and perfect for any summer gathering.
These final few weeks of summer are always so bittersweet. That special feeling that only summer can bring starts to wind down. The kids go back to school, vacation seems like it was months ago, and it might even be cooling off a little (well, not where I am, but you know, in some places) 😉 But that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy this last bit of the season! I, for one, am all about squeezing out a few more memorable meals before the summer really is gone.
This can actually be the perfect time to enjoy some relaxing meals alfresco. In most places the warm nights are still here, and there's the long Labor Day weekend ahead. Today I'm sharing six tips for a charming and simple farmhouse table setting that's perfect for Labor Day, a simple night grilling with friends, or a back-to-school send off!
1. Use Natural Linens
Farmhouse style, whether European or traditional, calls for linens made from natural materials. Think cotton or linen. These give off a casual vibe that you just don't get with synthetics.
This adorable runner is a classic example. I love it! It's made of cotton (and it's under $12!) and I love the soft grey color.
The soft sea glass blue napkins are perfect for summer! They coordinate, but aren't too matchy-matchy. And they also come in 10 different colors! I'm thinking of buying a few more sets since they can be used year-round for any occasion.
2. Feature Farmhouse Flowers
Again, the idea here is a relaxed, casual vibe so a bouquet that is unstructured just feels right. I'm all for fancy flowers when the occasion calls for it, but this isn't that. This is a come-as-you-are, hang out all evening kind of vibe. And for that, casual farmhouse flowers, wildflowers, or even flowers from your yard fill the bill!
The farmhouse style pitcher is the perfect vessel for some simple chamomile, and could the bee motif be any cuter?!
3. Use a Simple Color Palette
A simple farmhouse table setting called for soft and understated, so I used soft grey and blues for this table.
I layered a pretty pale aqua blue salad plate over a white dinner plate. The blue brings some color to an otherwise neutral table, but still maintains the soft look I was going for. The white dinner plates are part of the Pioneer Woman Farmhouse Lace dinnerware set – and the salad plate in this set is so adorable!
4. Add Some Rustic Elements
I always love to add rustic elements to any table, even my most elegant ones as it definitely makes the table feel a little more relaxed. In this case, it's especially important for keeping that farmhouse feel.
I adore these galvanized metal chargers! They're one of my favorite things I've bought this summer, and they're so versatile – I can definitely see using them again and again!
5. Light Some Candles
Always, always, always! I rarely set a table without them, and since this is outside, it's nice to have some ambience once the sun goes down. And candles make any night feel special 😉
6. Add Something Charming
These little chalkboard place cards are something I bought years ago, but they seemed especially appealing with the farmhouse feel of this table.
So don't let the fact that summer is waning make you miss out on some special nights. Set up a simple farmhouse table, grill up some casual food, and enjoy the last nights of Indian summer while you can! I can't wait to enjoy some meals under the stars this weekend. And then I'll really be ready for fall!
